Cologne inflict first European loss on Arsenal

Arsenal were shocked in their fifth round of game in the Europa league by lowly placed team, FC Cologne. The gunners lost to a side that has won just a game in the tournament so far despite being the dominating side in the game. When Cologne visited the Emirates in the opening game of the group, Arsene Wenger and his team won 3-1 buy could not repeat the feat once more.

The Cologne fans were as hostile as possible in their RheinEnergie Stadium but the North London were not having any of that as they dominated the game especially before the half time break. Couple of missed opportunity became Arsenal’s bane and the team will look back at it that it was a game they could have finish off early enough.

It was in the 62nd minute that Cologne converted from the spot kick after the referee had adorn a penalty against David Ospina. Sehrou Guirassy duly converted as he scored the only goal of the match.

There were however positives from the game despite the fact that the North London side lost their Europa unbeaten run to the worst team in Bundesliga. Arsenal will still qualify as the group winner despite still having a game in hand.

This is after Red Star Belgrade’s drew with Bate Borisov. Cologne now have six points, same with Red Star Belgrade while BATE has five points and after five games.

Arsene Wenger can now rest some of his senior players for the last game against BATE knowing fully well that the result is inconsequential to their qualification.

The Europa league has been the opportunity he has used to try some of the academy products and some have shown they have what it takes to make the first team. It is however unknown if Wenger will start using the senior players from the knock out stages as the Europa present a good opportunity for Arsenal to win a silverware this season.
