It is a January transfer will that will go down in Arsenal history as one of the best. From the point of losing a top-class player to signing two top class players. The latest is the final signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubayemang.
Arsenal finally got the Borrusia Dortmund star for a fee around £55m plus an extra £5m in add ons. The 28-year-old Gabonesse international has been on the Arsenal’s radar for a while but Arsenal did not budge to Dortmund’s €70m which was one of the reasons the deal stalled till the last day.
Aubayemang’s 31 league goals last season made him win the Bundesliga golden boot and was in hot demand last summer. He had however been having some issues with Dortmund which was a reason he has not been part of their last two matches before the draw with Freiburg in the league.
The Aubayemang’s deal was one of three deals that entangled each other. Dortmund completed the loan move of Michy Batshuayi from Chelsea before letting him go while Chelsea also completed the signing of Olivier Giroud from Arsenal for £18m before allowing Batshuayi to leave.
Aubayemang will now have the opportunity of playing alongside former teammate, Henrikh Mkhitaryan who also joined the Gunners this winter in a swap deal for Sanchez with Manchester United.
The combination of Mhkitaryan and Aubayemang was on either the deadliest in Europe in their last season together in 2015/2016 season. They both combined a total of 62 goals between them. This season alone, Aubayemang has scored 21 goals in 24 games for Dortmund before moving to the Emirates.
His total tally for the Bundesliga side since joining in 2013 from Saint Etienne was 141 goals and 23 goals in 56 caps from his national team, Gabon.
He will however be cup tied in the Europa league as he will not be playing for Arsenal due to UEFA cup rules because he had previously played in a European competition for Dortmund whom have now dropped to the Europa league from the champions league.
